A-Mill Artist Lofts

Harris installed the turbine and generator required to transform Minneapolis’ historic Pillsbury A Flour Mill into housing. The new LEED certified apartment complex for artists uses a hydrothermal system utilizing the flow of the Mississippi River to provide the building with some of its heating and cooling.

Harris worked in the old flour mill’s existing network of tunnels to install the turbine and generator crucial to the building’s mechanical needs. The project involved lowering the 15,000-pound turbine heart down a 60-foot shaft. The 19,000-pound generator and subsequent piping also had to be installed in the below-ground area. After installation, Harris performed the delicate generator alignment.

Working underground in a historic space with heavy equipment presented a challenge for the Harris team. Pumps were used to keep the area dry, lighting had to be installed to safely illuminate work areas, and extra time and effort was required to set up scaffolding in the tight, below-ground space.
