The development and construction of eBay’s new 2-level, Tier IV mission critical Topaz Data Center included the build-out of an administration office, a data center, electrical support areas, and mechanical rooms. This clean-build project earned the LEED Gold rating in 2010.
The project was a cooperative effort between many Harris Companies divisions with the initial estimating support taking place at our corporate headquarters in St. Paul, MN. The 3D CAD/BIM work was a collaborative effort between our St. Paul and Clearfield, UT offices.
Harris Mechanical Intermountain coordinated the fabrication and installation of all mechanical systems on an accelerated fast-track project schedule with onsite manpower peaking at approximately 80 field personnel.
This project included more than 22,000 linear feet of chilled and condenser water piping ranging in size from 2½” to 24,” suspended from the structure in level one or located outside on elevated pipe racks, and more than 330,000 pounds of duct work. Our divisions handled all pipe and duct work fabrication. All fabricated materials were delivered using our “just-in-time” approach and field construction management followed the “lean construction” method of scheduling and installation.
Four 1,500-ton custom modular chilled water plants fabricated in Houston, TX were also in scope for this project to provide chilled water. The plants were assembled and checked for proper operation, disassembled and shipped to the site for reassembly by Harris personnel with over 90 semi-loads of piping, duct work, and central plant parts & pieces arriving onsite for installation at this facility.
