Always mindful of the future, Hormel and the HiMEC Mechanical design team chose to incorporate “green” building practices into the construction of the office addition and was awarded LEED Gold Certification.
Some of the sustainable aspects of the building included:
- Geothermal heating and cooling systems, utilizing vertical bore well loops
- Low-flow plumbing fixtures for water conservation
- Rain-water collection cistern
- All heating and cooling systems are controlled via computer program, including occupancy sensors, in order to operate only when necessary and provide optimum comfort to the users of the space
On average, Hormel was able to save 40% on utility costs comparatively to “standard building” construction.
