Valspar Applied Science and Technology Center

Harris played a central role in overhauling the historic Valspar Applied Science and Technology (VAST) Center. After overseeing the demolition of existing mechanical and plumbing systems, Harris installed full plumbing and HVAC to the lower half of the building.

The Valspar labs test various types of paints and powders that require higher airflow rates and non-corrosive ductwork. With the large array of mechanical equipment running throughout the building, a Harris-led 3-D coordination effort between contractors was required to maintain acceptable ceiling heights. This project also included completely gutting the boiler plant and adding a four-chiller chilled water plant, 100 percent outside air handling units and high plume exhaust fans.

As the design-assist contractor, Harris organized everything from duct, pipe, vacuum and dust collection to creating a sequence of operations without a controls specification. The construction schedule was very aggressive resulting in changing scope and continuously offsetting value engineering items. To expedite the construction, Harris used modular manufacturing racks with hydronic piping, gas piping and cable tray. Duct risers were created in 30-foot lengths as well to reduce time spent with the roof open.
